RDM is recommended if you plan on using some of the special services provided by your SAN for this virtual machine; services such as:
replication,
snapshotting, or
something like a virtual and physical node in a MSCS clustered pair.
Otherwise stick with VMFS. There is virtually no performance difference and you retain the portability of your virtual machine.
